To read and interpret old paintings with pirmary school pupils in Quebec
Abstract : This article is the result of an exploratory research proposing an interdisciplinary approach for analysing and interpreting works of art in social sciences classrooms at the 4th and 5th degrees of elementary (equivalent to French’ CM1-CM2) in Québec. This approach attributes a dual status to works of art : aesthetic objects and historical documents. Its goal is to make teachers and their students engage in a work of interpretation that takes into account the aesthetic dimension of works of art. The research consisted of an in-class modeling sessi n (n = 4) followed by a watercolor analysis exercise, which allowed us to understand how students combine historical and aesthetic information gathered from their interpretative work.
Keywords : work of arts, iconographic documents, aesthetic objects, interpretative work, historical thinking, social studies, Quebec.
