Abstract : Visual perception requires the decoding, ordering and organizing of different pieces of information. In team sports, due to the complexity of the environment, a framework is needed to analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of ball and player movement. Such analysis is conducted with reference to stable elements, such as the court or the pitch, as well as to other more random elements determined by the player. Situations of play vary and are modified as a function of players’ actions. In this respect, the notion of prototypic configuration of play is of interest since it allows the player to optimize his or her play in situations of confrontation or opposition. It may also be hypothesized that the study of configurations of play can help students construct an operational image predicting the likely evolution of a given situation of play.
